The City is never at a loss for shopping options. And with the city’s recent onslaught of fashion boutiques it’s all the more intriguing to find a space that truly stands out from the pack. Nestled amidst the northern end of the fast developing Divisadero corridor, Still Life Clothing is quickly becoming a prime destination for fashion-conscious shopper in search of treasure.
Still Life Clothing is the life-long dream of Kelly Malone, a former Visual Merchandiser/ Stylist for corporate giants Victoria’s Secret and GAP and Charles Hurbert, online marketing manager and promoter who first met at a local flea market scouring for vintage finds. Soon after meeting, the two launched the Mission Indie Mart, a popular trunk show and launch pad for local designers. While little more than the size of a studio apartment, Still Life boasts an eclectic mix of hand-selected vintage and one of a kind fashions to offbeat crafts and handmade jewelry.
But what sets this quaint operation apart are the artful displays and fixtures, designed almost entirely from salvaged materials that give the space it’s identity. From the fixtures, cleverly designed from old doors to the disposed laboratory equipment re-appropriated as display pieces, the store has a perfect balance of the hip and odd to satisfy both discerning shoppers and those with a pension for the curious. The owners also curate an impressive collection of found photographs and slides (projected on the wall at night) that showcase everything from medical abnormalities to 1980s glam fashion captured on Polaroid.
Still Life is located at 835 Divisadero Street and hosted it’s grand opening on December 1st. Hours through March are Wednesday through Friday 2-8pm, Saturday & Sunday 12-8pm.
