“Vintage shops provide unique gear, but their messiness can leave you yearning for the chain stores and the generic pocket tees that made your virginity such a tough nut to crack. Get the best of both worlds with Still Life.

A carefully curated collection of vintage gems and local labels, Life’s a walk-in closet sized shop run by a former Victoria’s Secret/GAP stylist, who boosts her boutique goods’ appeal with the dark corporate art of visual merchandising. Easily findable on orderly racks, vintage standouts include hand-embroidered cowboy shirts, one-of-a-kind leather jackets lined with patterned silk, and ’70s-era Mercedes track jackets — perfect for the man who wants a Benz, but settles for sprinting away with their hood ornaments. The new stuff’s highlighted by hand-tooled wallets and belts, and tees from SF indies like Nooworks, 410 BC, and Deadbeat Sister (like a deadbeat dad, who squanders her neglected kids’ money on scrunchies).”

“This minimal boutique is a unique mix of pieces that are vintage and from local designers. Designers from the area offer jewelry made from old bottle pieces and previously worn leather. You’ll also find a good array of second-hand sweaters and blouses alongside the shoes and sunglasses. The selection is small, but this shop is worth a trip. The owners have presented a very well-edited collection so you won’t have to go digging for hours through useless old rags. Prices are reasonable and the staff is super-friendly.”

“The phrase “still life” conjures up boring images of bowls of fruit and vases of flowers.

But Still Life Clothing is doing its fashionable part to change that.

The NOPA boutique offers an affordable, hand-picked mix of vintage and indie fashions. Owners Charles Hurbert and Kelly Malone regularly hit trunk shows and flea markets to keep shelves stocked with the latest and greatest.

If you’re into something old, there’s a great selection of Mary Tyler Moore-esque dresses, vintage shoes, and killer belt buckles. In the new category, there are Malone’s reconstructed dresses crafted from vintage wolf T-shirts; handmade leggings by the local gam gods Please Dress Up; and Swan Dive’s bird, horse, and boat pendants.

With so many options, you’ll be sitting pretty.”
